Sy was die langbeen-meisiekind van Coligny wat wêreldrekords in hoogspring gebreek en vir Suid-Afrika Olimpiese medaljes huis toe gebring het.
Maar saam met die glorie het Hestrie Cloete-Els ook die seer van die lewe beleef: ‘n ouerhuis waar die rusies soms soos ‘n nat seil oor alles kom hang het; ‘n huwelik waarin sy haar te jonk begewe het; die dood van geliefdes – dikwels kort voor haar grootste atletiekbyeenkomste…
Oor dit alles – die soet én die suur – skryf Hestrie in haar outobiografie. Sy verwoord ook vir die eerste keer die emosies oor haar miskraam in 2004 toe sy en Andries Cloete nog getroud was. En vertel sy van haar lewe saam met Jurie Els en hul twee kinders in Nieu-Seeland en hoe sy voel oor die sanger Robbie Klay se aantygings dat Jurie hom as kind gemolesteer het.
