My naam is Martin Retief. Ek is dertien jaar, elf maande en twaalf dae oud. My ma noem my Martin, maar almal by die skool noem my Hoender. Ek hou daarvan om dinge te tel. Hoender Retief se hele lewe verander een middag toe sy pa op pad huis toe by ‘n winkel stilhou om ‘n snoek te koop. En terwyl sy gesin probeer om hul verlies te verwerk, versorg hy sy Leghorn-hoenders, verkoop eiers aan die mense op die plotte en doen saans wiskunde as hy sukkel om te slaap.
Maar op ‘n dag ontmoet Hoender vir Drikus. Drikus wat aan ‘n siekte ly wat na iemand vernoem is. Drikus wat daarvan droom om sy eie zombiefliek te maak. Wat volg, is ‘n avontuur vol skouhoenders, skelms, mooi meisies, wiskunde, kammabloed en zombies. ‘n Hartroerende en dikwels humoristiese grootwordverhaal wat ‘n ongewone blik bied op gesinne, vriendskap, die hantering van verlies … en lang deelsomme.
