Johannes se pa het sy werk verloor en sy ma werk nou as bediende by die ryk oom Alfred Botha. Johannes sien dat oom Alfred besonder baie van hom hou en hy besef dat as hy sy kaarte reg speel, sal die oom help dat hy ‘n akademiese toekoms het. Hy besef dat hy hulle armoede sal kan oorkom as hy toegeeflik is teenoor oom Alfred, en hy besluit om wel vir die oom te gee wat hy graag wil he.
Maar wanneer sy ma daarvan uitvind, pleeg hy uit skaamte selfmoord. Dan vertel hy sy verhaal uit die wêreld van die dooies en so word die impak van armoede en die mag wat mense soms oor weerlose mense het ontroerend verduidelik.

Good – Book shows visible reading wear but nothing serious.
Fair – Book shows clear and more significant wear, especially on the cover, but is still solid and intact.
Worn – Book shows severe wear and tear while still being intact (commonly known as a “reading copy”). Worn books are still good perfect for a good read, all pages will be intact with none threatening to fall out.
