Haar naam is Ruby – die vrou in rooi.Sy het van Heinrich Schmidt af weggevlug om alleen in daardie groot strandhuis op Witsandbaai te gaan woon. Sy het met die middeljarige Heinrich getrou omdat hy na jeug verlang het en sy na rykdom, maar een of ander tyd soek elke vrou na warmte ; daardie warmte wat slegs liefde aan haar kan besorg.
Op Witsandbaai het sy hom raakgeloop – jonk, sorgvry, maar heelwat jonger as sy. Hy was nog maar ‘n seun in vergelyking met haar lewensrypheid. Maar sy het hom liefgekry – daardie soort liefde wat die lewe van ‘n jong man in die waters van troebelheid laat beland. En toe daardie onstuimige nag met blitse en reën . . . Heinrich het haar kom haal, maar die noodlot het saam met hom gekom. ‘n Nag van verskrikking en onheil . . .
