Mma is sommer dadelik vies. “Wat wil jy met haar maak?”
“Ons het ‘n date.” Make-Peace kyk haar uitdagend aan.
“Wat se date?”
“Vir ‘n music group in die tavern.”
“Is dit daardie political pop group?” Mma se oë begin blits.
“Ek is post-protest. Ek is ‘n law student,” help Make-Peace haar sarkasties reg.
“Dis reg, jy is ‘n university student en Katie is ‘n schoolgirl,” vaar Mma uit. “Sy’s skaars vyftien, al lyk sy ouer. Dis teen die regulations.”
“Wie se regulations?” vra Make-Peace.
“Die tavern s’n, en myne ook.” Mma roep kamer se kant toe: “Katie, wil jy jou education ruil vir hierdie tsokabothepana wat met teenagers lol?”
“Aowa, Mma,” ontken Katie uit die kamer. Haar stem is dik, mens kan hoor sy huil. Sy was heelmiddag al besig met mooimaak, mens kan haar lyfpoeier en hair relaxer tot in die voorhuis ruik.
Ja, dís hoe die rusie met die Maponyas gekom het. Dit is waar die hele ellende begin het… Maar eintlik was dit ook waar alles begin het om reg te kom.
